The Sidecar is reserved for wingmen only. Think Robin to Batman, Barney to Ted and Cognac to a cocktail. The sidecar is a classic made up of triple sec, cognac, and lemon juice -No Sugar. Not the manliest cocktail EVER, but it definitely has enough kick to make it tougher than the average martini. In all honesty a martini has never been considered the go-to cocktail for men, but we can agree that James Bond carries that pass for all men, thus making strong cocktails manly even when served in a martini glass -as in the Martini featured here.
This drink is often singled out as the only good thing to come out of the long national nightmare that was Prohibition in the States. It stems from an era when simple qas better… The luminous, golden-straw color, the perfectly controlled sweetness, the jazzy high notes of the citrus against the steady bass of the brandy. It’s so easy, in fact, to be seduced by this clever old roué that a word of caution would not be out of place here. Try it and we guarantee you will be amazed.
Freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 cup Cognac or good brandy
1/2 cup Triple Sec or Cointreau
1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
Maraschino cherries or lemon peel, to garnish
If you want to frost the glasses, dip the rim or 4 martini glasses in a shallow plate of lemon juice and then in the sugar. Allow to dry for 15 minutes. Combine the Cognac, Triple Sec, and lemon juice in a pitcher. Pour some into a cocktail shaker with ice, shake well and pour into the glasses. Garnish with a cherry or lemon peel.
